Fumigation


Fumigation is a method of pest control at which the space is completely filled with gaseous pesticides /fumigants/ to destroy them. Experience has shown that the pesticides never solve the problems of 100%. They should be used as additional measure to good storage and high hygiene.

Our activities are aimed at preventing damage to the goods/ food caused by different pests during storage and transport. Through the effectiveness of our work we protect the goods/ food from damages and thus preserving their original quality and value.

The basic fumigant, which we use, is phosphine (hydrogen phosphate). It is a poisonous gas with chemical formula PH3. It is used worldwide as a disinfectant against insects, mites and rodents in all types of stored and transported food/ goods. Phosphine gas is generated from aluminum phosphide or magnesium phosphide.

Depending on the humidity and temperature, the duration of the process of dissolution of metal phosphide and the initiation of hydrogen phosphate /phosphine/ is different. The higher levels they have, the process flows for a short time.

Hydrogen phosphate /phosphine, PH3/, which is being released destroys the pests in all stages of their development. It is an excellent insecticide and has an exclusive penetrating power, enabling him to pass through tightly stored goods. The goods which have been fumigated with phosphine are not damaged and their smell and taste are not changed. Fumigant does not affect on germination and baking qualities. When is used in recommended doses it is not toxic to the plants.

Fumigation of goods in railway wagons, containers and vessels is made in order to avoid spreading the different pests that has already attacked the loaded commodity. Some importing countries obligatory require transit fumigation in order the goods at port of discharge to be free of pests.

The standard system presents the direct application of pellets or tablets on the goods using probes. Currently, this method is the most economically feasible and is used worldwide. Phosphine gas is released from pellets or tablets and is spreading among the grains. This process is slow and irregular, even at higher volumes, as silos and vessel holds the gas reaches difficult the bottom, which does not guarantee 100% effectiveness.

Recirculation system /J-system/ is a highly advanced system for fumigation of cargo ships. Through a set of pipes and electric fan the phosphine gas circulates in the goods. As a result, it is achieved rapid and uniform gas concentration throughout the volume. This method is more expensive, but much more effective. The system can be installed outside /in a silo/ and inside /on a vessel/.

To avoid mixing the pesticides with the goods, the tablets/ pellets can be drilled in sleeves. Other definitions of aluminum and magnesium phosphide, which are used for fumigation without pesticide residues, are "bags", "plates", "blankets."
Their advantage is that after degassing, the pesticide residues can be easily removed from the goods.
